Common fault
Why is my wine cooler not holding temperature?
Short answer
The number on the front panel is not the number the bottles are living at, so take your own reading down at the racks first. The sensor reports from where the air actually moves, and the racks can sit several degrees away from it, which is how a cabinet shows a steady display while the wine sits warm for a month. On a dual-zone unit, one zone holding while the other climbs is good news: the compressor is proven, and the fault belongs to that zone's own evaporator, fan or damper. If the glass fogs on the inside, that is a separate problem entirely, and it belongs to the door seal or the heater in the pane rather than to the refrigeration.
Coastal air makes the condensation version of this fault far more common than it is a few miles inland. The cabinet is holding a cool interior while humid outside air presses on the same sheet of glass, so a weakening pane heater or a seal that has stopped pulling square drops the glass below dew point. First it fogs, then it beads, then water runs down to the bottom rail and sits in the frame. The refrigeration in that scenario is working correctly the whole time, which is why replacing a control board changes nothing.
What we check, in order. A temperature reading at rack height in each zone, top and bottom, with the door shut long enough for the cabinet to settle. Then the fan in the drifting zone, then its damper, then its thermistor against known resistance. Then the condenser, which on a wine cabinet is usually harder to reach and correspondingly more neglected than the one in a refrigerator. Only after all of that does the sealed system come into the conversation, and by then the working zone has usually ruled it out anyway.
Cabinets in houses that stand empty for stretches are the ones that get hurt. Wine does not complain, so a zone can sit warm for weeks with nobody in the room to notice, and the damage is cumulative rather than sudden. If a house has been closed, put a thermometer at rack height for a day before assuming the cabinet is fine because the display looks right. That single reading is the cheapest insurance available on a collection, and it is the first thing we take when we arrive.
