OEM against aftermarket: where the money actually goes wrong
On a built-in, the part is almost never the expensive half of the repair. The visit is. Once a technician has been paid to pull the grille, find the fault and put the panel back on straight, a fan motor that saved a little on the shelf and fails within a season has not saved anything at all: it has bought the same visit twice, plus whatever was in the cabinet the second time. That is most of the argument in one paragraph. What is left is knowing which components genuinely tolerate a generic replacement, which never do, and how to tell a real part from a relabeled one before it is inside the appliance.
The arithmetic, before anybody's opinion
Diagnosis and access cost the same whichever part goes in afterward. That single fact reframes the whole question, because the saving on a generic component is measured against the full price of doing the job again rather than against the price of the original part. There is a second cost that is easier to miss. A cheap part that fails outright is annoying; a cheap part that works badly is worse, because it sends the next diagnosis in the wrong direction. A sensor reading three degrees off does not announce itself. It quietly shifts every decision the control board makes, and the technician who arrives next chases a fault that does not exist. The honest exception is a unit whose owner has already decided not to keep it. On that appliance, a cheaper part that buys one more season can be the right call, and it is worth asking for out loud.

The components where the difference is real
The rule that predicts almost every case: if the component has to talk to the control board or seal against something, the original matters. Later-generation evaporator and condenser fans are variable-speed motors that take a commanded speed rather than simply being switched on, so a single-speed substitute will spin and move air while the board loses the ability to modulate, and on some designs reads the missing feedback as a fault of its own. Thermistors are a resistance curve, not a switch, and a curve that is wrong at cabinet temperature does not fail; it lies. Defrost heaters are specified in watts and in physical routing, and the wrong wattage either cannot clear the coil inside the time the cycle allows or runs hotter than the plastic around it was designed for. Gaskets are a profile, a magnet strength and a molded corner.

Where aftermarket is fine, and where it is the only option
Everything that plumbs to the appliance rather than living inside it is ordinary hardware and should be bought on quality rather than branding: the supply line, compression fittings, the quarter-turn shutoff behind the unit, drain tubing, leveling feet and fasteners. Nobody needs a factory part number for a braided supply line. The other case is more interesting. On equipment past twenty years, some components have simply stopped being made, and at that point the choice is not original against generic. It is between a salvaged original, a board rebuilt by a shop that repairs the failed components on the existing board rather than replacing the whole thing, and a superseded part number. That last one confuses people regularly: when a manufacturer supersedes a part, the new number is still a factory part, and the physical differences are usually improvements made after the field told them something.

Water filters deserve their own paragraph
The filter is the one part most owners buy themselves, and it fails in two directions. Performance is the argument people have: whether a cartridge really reduces what the box claims. The one that costs money is fit. A cartridge whose head is slightly out of tolerance can seat, feel correct, and weep at the housing under line pressure, and water at that location does not run out onto the floor where somebody would see it. It runs into the cabinet base. A weep discovered three months later is a flooring problem rather than a filter problem. It is also worth remembering that the replacement interval is time as much as volume, because a cartridge that has sat wet for a year is not doing what a fresh one does regardless of how little water went through it.

Counterfeit and relabeled parts, and how not to buy one
A genuine component arrives carrying the manufacturer's own number, and that number matches what is stamped or printed on the part being removed. The warning signs of a relabeled one are consistent enough to be a checklist. A listing that claims to fit an implausibly wide range of models across several brands is describing a generic part with a sticker on it. Stock photography rather than a picture of the actual item, no part number anywhere in the listing, a price well below every other seller, and a seller with no return path are all the same signal. The practical defense costs nothing: photograph the failed component before it goes in the trash, including any numbering on the body, and buy where a return is actually possible.

Warranty, and the one repair this argument does not apply to
If the appliance is still inside its factory warranty, the question answers itself: call the manufacturer before anyone opens the unit, because there is no sense paying for work that is already covered, and coverage on the sealed system in particular can depend on who performs it. Outside warranty, the legal position is less dramatic than the internet suggests. Under US warranty law a manufacturer cannot void coverage merely because a non-original part was fitted; they would have to show that the part caused the failure being claimed. That is a real protection and also a fight worth avoiding. The sealed system sits outside this discussion altogether. Compressors, evaporators, driers and refrigerant lines are matched to the system and opening one requires certified refrigerant handling, so there is no consumer parts decision to make there.

Is an aftermarket evaporator fan really that different?
On older units with a simple switched motor, often not. On the later generations it matters, because the fan is a variable-speed motor that runs at a speed the control board asks for and, on some designs, reports back what it is doing. A substitute that only knows one speed will move air, but the board can no longer modulate airflow, and the compartment behaves oddly in ways that look like a control fault rather than a fan fault.
Are rebuilt or refurbished control boards a reasonable option?
They can be, and on older equipment they are sometimes the only option. The distinction worth making is between a board that has been genuinely repaired, with the failed components replaced and the work described, and a used board pulled from a scrap unit and cleaned up. The first is a repair with a history. The second is a board of unknown age, and it fails on its own schedule rather than yours.
The part for my twenty-year-old unit is discontinued. What now?
Ask three questions in order. Has the part been superseded, because a new factory number frequently exists and nobody looked. Is there a rebuild service for that specific component, which is common for control boards and some modules. And is there a salvaged original available from a parts specialist. Only after all three come back empty does a generic substitute become the sensible answer rather than the lazy one.
Can an aftermarket water filter damage the refrigerator?
Not usually the refrigeration, but it can damage the house. The risk is fit rather than filtration: a cartridge that is marginally out of tolerance at the head can seal well enough to feel right and still weep under line pressure, and that water tends to run into the cabinet base rather than onto the floor where it would be noticed. Check under and in front of the unit for a few days after any filter change.
Will fitting a non-factory part void my warranty?
Not by itself. Under US warranty law a manufacturer has to show that the part actually caused the failure being claimed rather than simply pointing at its presence. In practice, though, a warranty claim is a conversation you would rather not complicate, so while the appliance is still covered the sensible move is to call the manufacturer first and let the covered process handle it.

Do you have to pull the refrigerator out of the cabinetry to work on it?
No, and on a Del Mar built-in that is rather the point. Sub-Zero designed this equipment to be serviced where it stands: the condenser and its fan are reached through the lower grille, the evaporator through a panel inside the compartment, and the control board from the front. Dragging a fitted unit out pulls it across whatever flooring is in front of it and puts a heavy custom panel and a stone overhang at risk for no diagnostic gain at all. The exceptions are rare, and if one comes up you hear about it before anything moves.
How often does the condenser need cleaning on a house this close to the water?
The closer to the sand, the more often, and the coil will tell you long before a schedule does. Take the lower grille off and put a light behind the fins. If you can see through them, the interval you are on is working. If the aluminum is matted gray with dust bound into a salt film, or has gone chalky at the edges, it is overdue, and a household vacuum held at the grille will slide straight over the top of it without lifting any of it. A house west of the tracks with dogs in it loads its coil faster than the same model up on Del Mar Heights.
